On the heels of Discovery’s Shark Week, a study led by Florida International University is gaining notoriety. The study found that sharks are “functionally extinct” in 20 percent of the world’s coral reefs.
Sharks are vital, as they ensure the health of the marine ecosystem and are an indicator of overall ocean health. The scientists at FIU who have been working on this vast research project attributed the decline of sharks to overfishing.
There is hope, however. The research found that in countries, including the United States, where there are conservation policies in place, shark populations are able to recover.
