It’s been on many of our Thanksgiving tables since childhood. An easy, 10-minute preparation with five ingredients – the Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole. It was invented in 1955 by Dorcas Reilly in the company test kitchen to find broader use and increase sales for the company’s already popular Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup.
The fried onion topping was added and designed to provide texture and flavor and to brighten the color of a grayish-green dish on the table.
Campbell’s says that today over 40% of its production of Cream of Mushroom soup goes into the creation of green bean casseroles.
