Jacksonville International Airport shelves new terminal construction

With travel discouraged and an uncertain tourism industry, the Jacksonville International Airport has halted construction on the new Concourse B slated to open in 2022.

The new concourse would have provided six additional gates, but is not necessary with passenger rates dropping to record lows. On a recent Monday, the airport experienced passenger counts in the hundreds, where normal volume would be over 12,000 for the day.

Airport CEO Mark VanLoh told the Jacksonville Business Journal that it took four years for passenger rates to recover after the 2010 recession, and he expects the COVID-19 downturn and recovery to rival that.
