In the United States, uneaten food, or food waste, is the single largest component of municipal solid waste. It’s extremely harmful to the environment, as food breaks down into methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Thankfully, the City Beautiful is committed to making it easy for residents to recycle food waste. There are several drop-off locations, free backyard composters and so many other resources, empowering just about anyone to contribute to the effort — from the most experienced professional chefs to everyday health nuts making their 10th smoothie this week.
