Established during the Revolutionary War, the United States Navy turns 245 on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Continental Navy was established in 1775 and included two armed vessels with the purpose of disrupting the British supply ships.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo Zumwalt designated Oct. 13 as the Navy’s official birthday, ordering the day be celebrated “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service.”
The whole family can celebrate virtually by exploring one of America’s historic aircraft carriers, the USS Midway. Happy Birthday, Navy!
