Started nearly 350 years ago, the United States Postal Service is honoring the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine with a commemorative Priority Mail® stamp.
The Castillo is the oldest masonry fortification in America, built when Spain controlled “La Florida.” Using coquina, a soft and porous conglomerate of seashells, cannonballs were unable to shatter the walls, rather burrowing in and getting stuck in the walls.
Castillo de San Marcos is a National Monument operated by the National Park Service and open to the public Wednesday to Sundays, 9AM to 5PM. The stamp is available at the US Postal Service.
